Niwot head coach Kelly Christensen recaps the Cougars capturing a fifth consecutive Class 4A girls team title at the Colorado High School Activities Association state cross country championship meet at Norris Penrose Events Center in Colorado Springs. Niwot matched its record total of 20 points from last year, placing five scorers in the top six and all seven athletes among the first 14 finishers. The Cougars also improved their team time from 92:31 to 91:44, achieving the feat with a pair of freshmen in Addison Ritzenhein and Anna Prok in the lineup. Christensen shares the emotional journey of senior Lex Bullen, who was 25th in 2020 but didn't race at last year's state meet as a result of an injury, in addition to her overcoming a medical emergency in May that resulted in her being hospitalized in Tennessee, only to return to secure sixth for the Cougars. He also examines the second-place finish for the Niwot boys team by a 76-92 margin behind back-to-back winner Cheyenne Mountain. Niwot had five scorers in the top 25, but was unable to maintain a projected seven-point advantage at the 2-mile mark, as Cheyenne Mountain rallied to repeat as champions.
